1. If a liquid is spilled, blot it up as soon as you can with paper towels. Wipe the area with a damp cloth and blot it dry as soon as possible. Prompt removal is best!
2. Try to identify what was spilled. Many spots and spills can be removed with a clean damp cloth with either water or solvent on it.
3. If it is mud or clay, leave it alone and let it dry, then use your vacuum cleaner to lift off the soil particles, and finally, use a damp cloth to remove whatever soil is left from the top of the fibers. Don't over-wet the spot before removal.
Water borne spills (food, drink, soil, household liquids): Use a cloth wet with either clean water or TSP solution (provided by our Fiber Services Center - Mix one packet with 16 oz. of water in a spray bottle). Spray on spot, let sit a moment or two and blot it up. You might mist slightly around the area to prevent a water ring.
Acidic type spills (coffee, tea, fruit juices, Kool-Aid, urine spots): Most soaps will not remove these acidic spills. Just mix one part white vinegar with three parts water. Spray on or dab on with a clean cloth, leave it alone for two or three minutes, then wipe away with a damp cloth.
Oil, grease, tar spots: These require a solvent to break down the petroleum content (use a safe solvent cleaner, we recommend Everblum). Put the solvent on a clean cloth and dab on the spot. Repeat until spot is absorbed into the cloth. Lightly mist to prevent a ring.
Before attempting to clean, look underneath your cushions to find the recommended cleaning instructions and codes: “W” means spot clean with water, “S” means spot clean with solvent only, “W/S” means water or solvent and “X” means clean with no liquids, only brush or vacuum or powder.
Always pre-test any cleaning material in an inconspicuous or unexposed area before proceeding with your cleaning method.
If you find any color “bleeding”, dry the fabric quickly and proceed no further. Fiber Services products will not cause bleeding or crocking themselves (certain fabrics are just be prone to bleeding), but we will try to advise you on how to proceed.
To damp dust, dry vacuum first and often on surfaces. Spray a light mist of TSP onto your upholstery or carpet traffic areas and wipe with a clean towel.
